Natural Stone Care Guide
Natural stones are durable enough for meaningful everyday wear, but they are not indestructible. A few simple habits will help preserve their polish, color, setting, and character.
The Essential Care Rules
- Keep stones dry. Remove jewelry before showering, swimming, bathing, or prolonged contact with water.
- Avoid chemicals. Apply perfume, lotion, sunscreen, hairspray, and cleaning products before putting on your jewelry.
- Protect from impact. Natural stones may chip, scratch, or fracture when dropped or struck against hard surfaces.
- Store separately. Keep each piece in a soft pouch or divided jewelry box so harder stones and metal parts do not scratch softer materials.
- Limit heat and direct sun. Prolonged heat or sunlight may affect the color of some stones.
How to Clean Your Stones
For routine care, wipe the stone gently with a clean, soft, dry microfiber cloth. If needed, use a barely damp cloth and dry the piece immediately. Do not soak natural stone jewelry and do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaners unless a qualified jeweler has confirmed that every material in the piece is suitable.
Extra Care for Softer or Sensitive Materials
Pearl, mother of pearl, opal, fluorite, malachite, moonstone, labradorite, turquoise, rhodochrosite, lepidolite, and similar materials deserve especially gentle handling. Avoid water, chemicals, abrasives, heat, and sudden temperature changes.
Elastic Bracelet Care
Roll an elastic bracelet gently over the hand instead of pulling it wide. Avoid stretching it repeatedly, sleeping in it, or wearing it during exercise. Store it flat and inspect the cord periodically.
About Cleansing Rituals
If symbolic cleansing is part of your personal ritual, choose a dry, low-risk method such as intention setting, sound, breath, or placing the stone near—not directly on—appropriate dry materials. Water, salt, smoke, and sunlight can damage certain stones. Ritual practices are personal traditions and do not change the physical care requirements of the material.
CRYSTAL CARE
How to Care for Natural Crystals
Natural crystals vary in hardness, structure and sensitivity. Gentle, dry care protects their polish, color and one-of-a-kind surface character.
Everyday Cleaning
Dust with a clean, soft microfiber cloth. When appropriate, use a barely damp cloth and dry the piece immediately. Never soak a crystal unless its mineral type and treatment are known to be water-safe.
Light & Heat
Keep amethyst, rose quartz, smoky quartz and other color-sensitive stones away from prolonged direct sunlight. Avoid rapid temperature changes, heaters and hot display lights.
Water & Chemicals
Do not use bleach, alcohol, perfume, household cleaners, salt water or ultrasonic machines. Keep porous, metallic and layered minerals—such as pyrite, malachite, turquoise, opal, pearl and mother-of-pearl—dry.
Storage & Display
Store jewelry separately in a soft pouch. Place collector pieces on a stable, level surface away from edges, vibration and humid areas. Move large specimens with two hands and lift from the base, never from delicate crystal points.
